In collaboration with Mr. Noodles and partnered with Red Carpet 365 Ltd., the British Council is going to host Poush Mela (Winter Fair) at the British Council with great excitement and the essence of Bangladeshi culture

  • to bring together urban and rural craft through folk and fusion presentation of crafts, music and stage shows
  • to create the opportunity for our target audience by offering convening and networking space
  • to support the development of a skilled, entrepreneurial society
  • to promote artistic collaboration and
  • to create opportunities for social change


Poush Mela is a colourful carnival that takes place in rural Bangladesh and West Bengal in India, marking the harvest season. The Bangla month Poush starts from 16 December and ends on 14 January. The fair lasts from three days to a week, although vendors may stay until the month-end. The key characteristic of this fair includes live performances of folk music, dance and play.

About Poush Mela 2018

Poush Mela will welcome the visitors with an impressive entrance decorated with the theme of village hut evoking the nostalgia of rural life of Bengal. To highlight the traditional skill of the artisans of Bengal, a small exhibition mostly with the women entrepreneurs, will be arranged. The entrepreneurs will exhibit and sale:

  • pitha-puli
  • handicrafts
  • garment items
  • paintings
  • clay items
  • publication
  • decorative plants
  • miniature of the popular historical sites etc.

What are there for you?

Poush Mela will have two segments. A segment will hold the exhibition part and another segment of the fair will be dedicated to the local festive cuisine. With a fusion taste of the rural Bengal mixed up with urban style, a range of events and activities will be arranged focusing on the children, youth and adults. One can enjoy the Baul musicians, puppet shows, poetry recitations.

There will be monkey shows and jumping games for the children.

Performance Poetry by Monsoon Letters

Winter evenings and a corner in the city, smelling of verses, strums of guitar and home- baked poetry. To cultivate a space of creativity and self-expression, the idea of a poetry gathering is simple. You are invited to come and perform your poems, letters or stories. The open mic event will begin with recitations and performances by young poets and musicians.

Submissions can either be in Bangla or English. All poets, writers, artists and people of the creative persuasion are invited to participate. Share with us your best poems and stories of the simple and pure pleasure you’ve experienced in the act of giving. To submit your work (upto 3), send it, with your name and occupation, at with "Poush Mela" in the subject line.

The programme will be jointly organised by Monsoonletters which is a tri-monthly literary publication based in Bangladesh that promotes poetry, creative writing and the visual arts. More information about them can be seen at:

Chokka - Learn how to be a business man

Chokka is an interactive activity that will be conducted by BetterStories Limited. This session will focus on entrepreneurial skills. There a board game will be played by the audience in teams. Teams will go through the stages of setting up a business, commence maintenance and growing it.It will be a simulation of what happens in real life, through the game the team will earn scores and they have to compete with each other to win prizes at the end of the session. 

Entry Requirements

The fair will be open to the public and there won’t be any tickets or entry fee. The gates will be open to the public at 10.00 in the morning on both the days.

Notes to the visitors

  • The visitors may need to wait in the queue for security purposes
  •  There will be gifts for the visitors waiting in the queue
  •  A visitor token slip will be provided to all the visitors while entering the British Council. The visitors must fill in the token and drop it in the drop box while leaving the fair. 10 lucky visitors will be awarded the British Council memberships through a lottery randomly.

  • stall booking fee BDT 15,000 (for two days)
  • to book a stall, register through this portal and let us know your interest along with your name, contact number and the type of products you want to showcase and sale
  • all the stalls will be booked on first come first serve basis
