Tuesday 08 April 2014

The British Council and the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education (DSHE) formed a collaborative partnership through signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on 8 April, 2014. This MoU acknowledges shared goals between the participants around raising the standards of Secondary Education in Bangladesh.

The British Council is offering professional and skills development training for Head Teachers and subject teachers as part of their Connecting Classrooms Programme. These trainings will be provided in collaboration with DSHE flagship project Teaching Quality Improvement (TQI). The British Council is happy to be working with TQI again and to support capacity building of teachers and Head Teachers working in secondary schools in Bangladesh. The British Council will provide Leadership training for Head Teachers and Global Citizenship training for subject teachers.

The British Council worked in partnership with TQI on a project (TQI 1) from 2005 to 2012 to improve teachers’ capacity in ICT by providing training, laptops and smart phones. There were 127 government schools and around 300 teachers involved in this collaboration. Some of those teachers are still involved with the British Council’s Connecting Classrooms Programme.

The British Council’s Connecting Classrooms Leadership Programme has 20 modules that support Head Teachers to develop their leadership skills through training and international collaboration. Connecting Classrooms offers a range of professional development learning opportunities for teachers to improve their skills, bringing a global dimension to their curriculum. The British Council’s Connecting Classrooms course on Global Citizenship will be incorporated into TQI subject trainings for teachers.

This year, 1000 teachers will be trained under this partnership agreement, which covers an initial one year pilot period of joint activities from April 2014 to April 2015, with a possibility of extension.

The MoU signing ceremony took place at Shikha Bhabon, Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education (DSHE). Prof. Fahima Khatun, Director General of DSHE signed the MoU on behalf of the Government of Bangladesh. Mr. Robin Davies, Director Partnerships and Programmes was the signatory on behalf of the British Council. Mr. Mushfiqur Rahman, Deputy Project Director, TQI 2 was present at the event among other distinguished guests.
