Just a few months ago, this place was nothing more than a dumping ground, filled with waste and neglected by the community. Nothing seemed to grow here, and no one imagined it could be different. Yet, a group of determined youngsters from Chattogram saw potential, whereas others saw only garbage.
These young people received training from Young Power in Social Action (YPSA), one of the implementing partners of the Building Agency of Youth in Climate Action project by the British Council. Equipped with knowledge and a passion for change, they decided to reclaim this space and make a meaningful contribution to combating climate change.
They didn’t just stop at cleaning it up. They reached out to local disadvantaged women, offering them training in innovative farming techniques. These women learned how to farm sustainably and were provided the tools and resources needed to start.
Slowly but surely, the transformation began. What was once a barren wasteland has started to bloom with greenery. Today, as seen in the pictures, the area is vibrant and full of life, symbolising what collective action can achieve. The efforts of these young changemakers have made the landscape greener; they have also built community capacity, empowered local women, and turned their vision into a place of growth and opportunity.
But they aren’t stopping there! They plan to clean another nearby area and transform it into a playground for the children of the marginalised community. They have already started raising awareness among the local people to prevent waste dumping. They will advocate with the local government to develop a better waste management system.
Together, they aspire to make a meaningful impact, building a sustainable future for everyone.
