The British Council facilitates partnerships, dialogue, research and opportunities in International Higher Education. This work includes staging the annual Going Global conference.

Some important strands of our International Higher Education work are outlined below.

Strategic Partnerships

Strategic Partnership is an important component of the British Council Higher Education programme that aims to significantly strengthen academic and research collaborations between Higher Education institutions (HEIs) in the UK and Bangladesh. These institution-to-institution links include a mix of research co-operation, teacher and student exchange and curriculum development.

Policy Dialogue

Policy Dialogue is one of our Higher Education activities that brings together policy level practitioners and experts from across the globe to discuss and debate contemporary issues that have local, regional and global importance for international inputs. This is a collaborative approach, which enables the discussion of policy issues on Higher Education and influences change and progress at the highest level.

In Bangladesh we are building relationships and networking, working with education policy makers and encouraging them to develop best practice in education and global citizenship and support Bangladesh's national priorities. We aim to develop and support the nation’s education agenda by organising study visits, conferences and workshops.

Going Global

Going Global is an annual conference hosted by the British Council, which offers an open forum for global leaders of international education to discuss current issues. Since 2004, it has grown from a biennial event in the UK to an annual event alternating between the UK and major international cities.

In addition to the platform for education world leaders to debate international higher and further education issues and challenges, and to discuss collaborative solutions, the event provides an opportunity for networking, and has become a fixture of the global education calendar. The conference consists of a series of collaborative sessions that focus on the year’s chosen themes.

Over 1,000 registered delegates from across the tertiary (further and higher) education sectors and various other sectors with perspectives on international education attend each year.

See the Going Global website for more details.

Development Partnerships in Higher Education (DelPHE)

Development Partnerships in Higher Education (DelPHE) is a programme from the UK government’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), which is managed by the British Council. The programme provides funding for partnerships between higher education institutions (HEIs) working on collaborative activity linked to development goals. In Bangladesh, we developed seven such partnerships between 2006-11.

The main purpose of this programme is to enable HEIs in partner countries to act as a catalyst for poverty reduction and sustainable development. It also aims to strengthen the capacity of HEIs to contribute to the United Nations' Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and promote science and technology related knowledge and skills.
